Alejandro G. Iñárritu reunites with Birdman writers for Digger.
Tom Cruise will lead Digger, a new original film from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are behind the upcoming movie, which will arrive in theaters and IMAX in fall 2026.
Cruise stars as Digger, described as the most powerful man in the world. The character embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s savior before a disaster he unleashed destroys everything.
Tom Cruise Leads the Digger Cast
Cruise is joined by Academy Award winner Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Academy Award nominee Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Academy Award nominee Jesse Plemons. Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman, and Sophie Wilde also star.
Digger marks Cruise’s latest major theatrical project following Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which opened in May 2025. His filmography also includes Top Gun: Maverick, Jerry Maguire, Minority Report, Collateral, Edge of Tomorrow, The Last Samurai, and the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu Directs Digger
Iñárritu directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, based on a story by Iñárritu and Berman. Dinelaris and Giacobone previously worked with Iñárritu on Birdman, which won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.
Iñárritu’s acclaimed filmography also includes Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful, The Revenant, and Bardo. He has received five Academy Awards throughout his career.
Digger Reunites Iñárritu With Emmanuel Lubezki
Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki reunites with Iñárritu as the film’s director of photography following their work on Birdman, The Revenant, and Bardo.
The behind-the-scenes team also includes editors Conor O’Neill and Academy Award winner Stephen Mirrione, costume designer Jacqueline West, and makeup and hair designer Alessandro Bertolazzi. Francine Maisler handled casting, while Dennis Gassner and Richard Johnson led the production design. Kazu Hiro served as prosthetic makeup designer, and Cosmo Sheldrake composed the score.
Digger was shot entirely in VistaVision. Warner Bros. Pictures will release the film in theaters and IMAX on October. 2, 2026.
