Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh Unite for Apple’s Mayday

The Game Night directors take on the Cold War.

Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh are heading behind enemy lines in Mayday, a new action comedy from Apple Original Films and Skydance Media. The genre-bending buddy movie will premiere on Apple TV on September 4, 2026. Reynolds and Branagh lead a cast that also includes Marcin Doroncinski, Maria Bakalova, and David Morse.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein wrote, directed, and produced the movie. The filmmaking duo previously worked together on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Game Night.

With Mayday, Daley and Goldstein are taking inspiration from the buddy movies that defined the 1980s. However, their story places its mismatched heroes in the middle of a dangerous Cold War operation.

Mayday Pairs Ryan Reynolds With Kenneth Branagh

Reynolds stars as Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot selected for a top-secret mission. The mission sends Troy into Russian territory during the height of the Cold War. The operation quickly falls apart, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines without an obvious path home.

His situation becomes even more complicated when he is discovered by Nikolai Ustinov, played by Branagh. Nikolai is a gruff former KGB agent who has developed an unexpected fascination with American culture. Troy initially believes his capture means certain death. Instead, the two men may have more in common than either of them expects.

Their unlikely partnership could become Troy’s best chance of escaping Russian territory. It may also create a meaningful bond between two men who were raised to view each other as enemies.

The directors described the movie as a tribute to a specific era of action comedy.

“The buddy films of the 1980’s were a bizarre and enticing blend of humor, danger, and genuine heart,” Daley and Goldstein said. “‘Mayday’ is our ode to this genre, with the unlikely pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Sir Kenneth Branagh in a Cold War adventure that explores what it means to be patriotic, but ultimately what it means to be human.”

A Cold War Spy Thriller With an Action-Comedy Twist

Mayday will flip the traditional spy thriller on its head by blending international danger with humor and genuine emotion.

The movie’s central pairing brings together two characters from opposite sides of the Cold War. Troy is an American military pilot trapped in hostile territory. Nikolai is a former KGB agent whose interest in American culture separates him from the typical enemy operative.

Their relationship appears to be the heart of the story. While the movie will feature a rescue mission and Cold War espionage, Daley and Goldstein are also using the adventure to examine patriotism, identity, and shared humanity.

Reynolds is also involved behind the camera. He executive-produced Mayday alongside George Dewey through Maximum Effort. John G. Scotti also serves as an executive producer. The movie marks another collaboration between Reynolds’ Maximum Effort and Skydance Media.
