Celebrate National Superhero Day with our Top 10 favorite fictional heroes.

April 28 marks National Superhero Day, a time to celebrate the heroes who inspire us — both the fictional characters we grew up admiring and the real-life heroes who walk among us daily.
First created by Marvel Comics employees in 1995, National Superhero Day reminds us that superheroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes, they wear scrubs or badges or simply offer a helping hand to those in need. Whether in comic books, movies, or real life, a true hero stands up for what’s right, even when the odds are against them.
To mark the occasion, we’re ranking our Top 10 favorite fictional superheroes — characters who have stood the test of time and continue to inspire generation after generation.
10. The Phantom

Before Superman or Batman, there was The Phantom — a masked crimefighter who protects the jungles of Bangalla, passing his title from father to son for centuries.
The Phantom is known as “The Ghost Who Walks,” and he’s one of the very first comic book heroes. He doesn’t have superpowers, but his legend — and that iconic purple costume — has made him a timeless figure in superhero history.
9. Silver Surfer

A cosmic traveler with a deep sense of honor, Silver Surfer’s storylines are often philosophical, showing us the battle between duty and freedom.
Once a noble man named Norrin Radd, the Silver Surfer rides the cosmos on his board, forever searching for meaning after sacrificing everything to save his home. The Silver Surfer represents the perfect mix of action and deep storytelling. His adventures are about more than flashy battles; they’re about loneliness, sacrifice and what it means to truly be free.
8. The Rocketeer

A true underdog story, The Rocketeer brings a grounded, pulpy charm to the superhero world. With just a jetpack and courage, he takes flight against evil.
A daring stunt pilot in 1930s Los Angeles, Cliff Secord finds a jetpack that turns him into the high-flying Rocketeer, battling spies and gangsters to protect the innocent. The Rocketeer captures the spirit of old-school heroism — he’s not in it for glory, he’s just a guy trying to do the right thing with the tools he’s got. His retro adventures are still some of the most fun around.
7. Superman

The ultimate symbol of hope and truth, Superman set the standard for superheroes everywhere. He’s still the gold standard for doing the right thing.
As Clark Kent, he reminds us that strength isn’t just about power — it’s about compassion. Superman is the blueprint for every hero that followed. His moral compass, optimism and refusal to give up make him not just a powerful figure, but a symbol of hope for all of humanity.
6. Iron Man

Tony Stark showed the world that you don’t need superpowers to be a superhero. All you need is brains, heart and a little style (and maybe a cool suit of armor).
Genius billionaire Tony Stark builds a suit of armor to save his life and becomes Iron Man, proving that heart and innovation can turn anyone into a hero. Iron Man is a reminder that heroes aren’t born — they’re made. Tony Stark’s journey from selfish weapons maker to selfless protector is one of the greatest arcs in superhero storytelling.
5. Wolverine

Rough around the edges but with a heart of gold, Wolverine taught us that it’s okay to be a little broken — and that healing takes time, inside and out.
Tough, fearless and nearly indestructible, Wolverine is a loner with a tortured past who always fights for the underdog — no matter how much it hurts. Wolverine is one of the most relatable heroes because of his flaws. He’s rough, he’s angry and he struggles with his past — but he never stops fighting for what’s right, even when it’s messy.
4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael are the perfect team. They’ve entertained fans for decades with their loyalty, humor and pizza-loving spirit.
The TMNT are four mutant brothers trained in ninjutsu who balance saving the city with being typical (pizza-loving) teenagers. The Turtles show that teamwork, loyalty and brotherhood are just as important as throwing punches. Whether they’re battling Shredder or goofing off at home, they’re a perfect blend of action and heart.
3. Spider-Man

Peter Parker is the everyday hero, juggling everyday problems with world-saving responsibilities. His famous motto—”With great power comes great responsibility”—never goes out of style.
As the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, he is a regular kid who uses his spider-powers to protect others while struggling with everyday life and loss. Spider-Man resonates because he’s one of us. Behind the mask is a kid dealing with real-world problems — bills, school, grief — all while saving New York City one web-sling at a time.
2. Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond)

Terry carried the Batman legacy into the future with a mix of teenage bravado and heartfelt determination, proving that heroism is timeless even in a high-tech world.
In a futuristic Gotham, teenager Terry McGinnis inherits the Batman mantle from an aging Bruce Wayne, proving that courage and determination never go out of style. Terry’s story is all about legacy and second chances. He may not be the original Batman, but he proves that a new generation can pick up the cape and make it their own — with style, attitude and heart.
1. Batman

The Dark Knight remains the ultimate superhero. Driven by personal tragedy but fueled by an unbreakable moral code, Batman is proof that anyone, no matter their past, can rise to be a symbol of justice.
By day, Bruce Wayne is a billionaire; by night, he’s the Dark Knight of Gotham. Batman shows that true heroism comes from inner strength, not superpowers. Batman remains one of the greatest superheroes because he faces his demons head-on. He’s a symbol that even in a dark world, someone can rise up, stand tall and fight back without ever crossing the line.
National Superhero Day is a great time to thank the everyday heroes around us — teachers, first responders, nurses, volunteers and countless others — who make our world a better place. Because when it comes down to it, heroes are everywhere. Sometimes, all it takes is a little courage and kindness to be one.
