Ultraman: Rising Directors Reflect on Global Response of Netflix Film

Inside Netflix’s animated hit Ultraman: Rising and the team behind it.

Ultraman: Rising, now streaming on Netflix, has quickly become a fan favorite, drawing praise for its modern storytelling and vibrant animation. Directed by Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima, the film brings the legendary Japanese superhero into a new light, captivating both longtime fans and newcomers alike. Recently, I had the chance to sit down with both directors at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to discuss the global response and the unique experience of introducing Ultraman to new audiences. Watch the conversation below!

The directors were thrilled with the enthusiastic response on social media, with Shannon sharing that he monitors the online buzz daily. “It’s been incredible,” he said. “I like seeing it all, the good and the bad, but the majority has been really positive. Reading comments from fans around the world, even with translated messages, has been heartwarming.” John added that the audience’s surprise at the film’s depth and quality has been particularly gratifying: “They come in not knowing what to expect, and they get more than they anticipated.”

A standout aspect of this Netflix film is its voice cast.

Christopher Sean leads Ultraman: Rising as protagonist Ken Sato. “We had open auditions, and the moment we heard Christopher’s voice, we knew he was the one,” Shannon explained. Both directors described a selection process deeply influenced by their vision for the characters. “For me, I close my eyes, listen, and imagine the character,” he added. “Christopher’s voice just married perfectly with the design.”

The directors emphasized the importance of balance throughout our conversation. This balance applies both to their personal lives and as a theme in the movie. Shannon revealed their thoughtful approach to team work-life balance, while John shared that he uses Ultraman as a “moral compass” to navigate life’s challenges.

We owe a lot to Netflix. Our trip included a memorable visit to Skywalker Ranch. The Ultraman team celebrated the culmination of their hard work there. Reflecting on what’s next for the franchise, Shannon hinted at a future storyline involving Ken’s mother’s journey to Nebula M78, a concept sure to intrigue fans eagerly awaiting a sequel. As we wrapped up, I gifted them a Nerdtropolis pin, sealing our conversation and friendship. Whether you’re a die-hard Ultraman fan or a newcomer, Ultraman: Rising is a powerful reimagining of a classic hero. It blends nostalgia with fresh energy.
