Neon’s Cannes drama brings Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve together for Cristian Mungiu’s unsettling story of family, culture and prejudice.

Neon’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner is finally heading to North American theaters following its festival runs throughout the year. Recently, Neon released the official trailer for Cristian Mungiu’s upcoming thriller, Fjord, which premieres in theaters this October.
Fjord follows a Norwegian woman, played by Renate Reinsve and her Romanian husband, played by Sebastian Stan, as they relocate to a small, remote town. When their teenage children quickly bond with a neighboring family, tensions begin to brew around their own beliefs. As allegations of abuse begin to rise, the family is forced to confront a system of judgment that blurs the lines between concern and prejudice.

In addition to the official trailer’s release, the new poster for Fjord also released, highlighting the complicated family dynamics of this film. Given the intense focus and themes, Mungiu’s drama-thriller deeply resonated with viewers during its festival run. Notably, Neon acquired the film’s North American rights before Fjord premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Following its run at this year’s Cannes, Fjord will also premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September, where it is nominated for the festival’s San Sebastián Audience Award.
Fjord Earns Acclaim Following Cannes Premiere
With this acquisition, Neon scored its seventh straight Palme d’Or win, with critics raving about how unsettling, daring, and well-acted it was. That should be no surprise, given Stan and Reinsve headling this feature.
Reinsve recently starred in the Kane Parsons-A24 horror collaboration of Backrooms, where she played a therapist who finds herself trapped in a ever-changing labyrinth. Meanwhile, Stan is finding himself returning to the world of Marvel once again in Avengers: Doomsday, but will soon join Matt Reeves’ Batman series as Harvey Dent. Stan previously spoke on his reasons for joining Fjord‘s cast.
“He’s been up there with me for a few years with filmmakers from Romania where I’ve been calling him trying to find a way to work with him, where I can speak Romanian as well,” Stan told IndieWire. “We finally found this story, which is about a Romanian family who’s moved to Norway and then ends up in this very complicated trial.”
Fjord releases in theaters on October 9.
