Zootopia 2 is the fastest animated and PG-rated film to hit the milestone, reshaping 2025’s theatrical landscape.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia 2” has officially crossed the $1 billion global box office mark after just 17 days in release, cementing its place as one of the fastest and most successful animated films in theatrical history.
The blockbuster sequel has earned $1.137 billion worldwide, driven by a massive international turnout that underscores the franchise’s global appeal. Domestic receipts account for $258.5 million (22.7%), while international markets delivered a staggering $878.9 million (77.3%), positioning the film as one of the most dominant worldwide releases of the year.
The achievement makes Zootopia 2 the second Motion Picture Association release of 2025 to reach the billion-dollar milestone, following Disney’s live-action hit “Lilo & Stitch.” It also becomes the fastest animated MPA release and the fastest PG-rated film of all time to cross the threshold.
A Record-Setting Opening and Sustained Global Momentum
“Zootopia 2” opened on November 26 with a record-breaking $559.5 million global debut in just five days, marking the highest animated opening ever worldwide. It also stands as the largest global debut of 2025 and the biggest animated opening in Disney history.

Internationally, the sequel has remained dominant. It currently ranks as the No. 1 international MPA release of the year, reinforcing Disney Animation’s renewed theatrical momentum at a time when audiences continue to gravitate toward premium big-screen experiences.
At Nerdtropolis, we praised the sequel’s emotional depth, character-driven storytelling, and stunning visual scale. You can read our full review, where we break down why the film resonated so strongly with both longtime fans and new audiences.
China Drives Historic Numbers
China has been one of the film’s most powerful markets. Zootopia 2 delivered the highest animated opening ever for a non-local title, launching with $272 million. It also became the highest-grossing non-local animated film of all time in the country, achieving the feat in just five days.

To date, the film has earned an estimated $447 million in China, making it the No. 2 MPA release of all time in the territory, behind only Avengers: Endgame. With this success, The Walt Disney Studios now holds three of the top five highest-grossing MPA titles ever released in China.
Disney Animation Enters a New Era
This milestone marks the first back-to-back billion-dollar releases for Walt Disney Animation Studios, following last year’s “Moana 2.” Since 2013, the studio now boasts five billion-dollar global hits: Frozen, Frozen 2, Moana 2, Zootopia, and Zootopia 2.
Streaming Boost Reflects Franchise Power
The film’s box office run has also reignited interest across Disney’s streaming ecosystem. “Zootopia” and “Zootopia+” have now been viewed for more than 725 million hours globally on Disney+, highlighting the franchise’s sustained cultural footprint well beyond theaters.
As Zootopia 2 continues its worldwide run, its success stands as a reminder that animated storytelling, when paired with emotional intelligence and theatrical ambition, still has the power to unite audiences on a global scale.
