Vertical’s new period survival thriller pairs Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe in a dangerous story of freedom, gold and betrayal.
Vertical is bringing two acclaimed actors together for The Weight, a new survival thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe. Directed by Padraic McKinley, the film puts Hawke at the center of a dangerous journey involving prisoners, stolen gold, and the promise of freedom. Crowe stands on the other side of that proposition as the ruthless warden who sends him on the mission.
The Weight will be released exclusively in U.S. theaters by Vertical on September 18, 2026.
What Is ‘The Weight’ About?
Hawke stars as Samuel, a father who is torn away from his daughter and sent to a brutal prison. His circumstances change when Warden Clancy, played by Crowe, presents him with a dangerous opportunity to regain his freedom.
Samuel must join a crew of prisoners tasked with smuggling gold out of a remote mine. If he succeeds, Clancy promises that he can walk free and potentially reunite with his daughter.
Getting the gold out, however, is only the beginning.
The group must travel through an unforgiving wilderness while greed, suspicion, and desperation begin to consume its members. As tensions rise, betrayal and violence become an even greater threat than the terrain surrounding them.
For Samuel, surviving the journey becomes about far more than freedom. He must make it home to his child.
Ethan Hawke Leads ‘The Weight’
Hawke has built one of Hollywood’s most varied careers by moving between major studio productions, independent films, horror, dramas and deeply personal character-driven stories.
One of his earliest breakthrough performances came in Dead Poets Society, where he starred alongside Robin Williams. Hawke later became closely associated with filmmaker Richard Linklater through their acclaimed collaborations.
He starred opposite Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, with the trilogy becoming one of the defining projects of his career. Hawke also appeared in Linklater’s Boyhood, an ambitious production filmed across 12 years.
His performance in Training Day, opposite Denzel Washington, earned Hawke an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He received another acting nomination for Boyhood, while his writing on Before Sunset and Before Midnight also earned Oscar nominations.
Hawke’s extensive filmography also includes Gattaca, Reality Bites, Sinister, The Purge, First Reformed, The Northman and The Black Phone.
More recently, Hawke joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Arthur Harrow in Moon Knight and returned as The Grabber in Black Phone 2.
With The Weight, Hawke once again gets the opportunity to play a character under enormous psychological and physical pressure. Samuel’s desire to reunite with his daughter gives the dangerous mission an emotional motivation beyond simply escaping prison.
Russell Crowe Plays Warden Clancy
Crowe brings an equally extensive career to The Weight as Warden Clancy, the man holding Samuel’s freedom in his hands.
The New Zealand-born actor became one of Hollywood’s biggest dramatic stars following acclaimed performances in movies including L.A. Confidential and The Insider.
His career reached another level with Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, where Crowe starred as Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius. The performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor and remains one of his most recognizable roles.
Crowe followed Gladiator with another acclaimed performance as mathematician John Nash in Ron Howard’s A Beautiful Mind. His work earned him another Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
His career has continued across historical epics, dramas, action movies, superhero films and comedies. Crowe’s notable projects include Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Cinderella Man, 3:10 to Yuma, American Gangster, Robin Hood, Les Misérables, Man of Steel, The Nice Guys and The Pope’s Exorcist.
Crowe has also played Zeus in Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder and portrayed Superman creator Jor-El in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
Warden Clancy gives Crowe another commanding authority figure to tackle, but this time his character controls the dangerous bargain driving the story.
Who Else Stars In ‘The Weight’?
Hawke and Crowe lead an ensemble that also includes Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, Avi Nash and Sam Hazeldine.
Jones is known for projects including The Twilight Saga, Dexter: New Blood and The Mandalorian. Amelio is widely recognized for playing Dwight across The Walking Dead universe, while Nash starred as Siddiq in The Walking Dead.
Hazeldine recently reached an even larger global audience as Adar in the second season of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Together, the ensemble gives The Weight a cast filled with actors experienced in stories built around survival, violence and complicated moral choices.

McKinley directs The Weight from a screenplay written by Matthew Chapman and Shelby Gaines.
The story is credited to Matthew Booi, Leo Scherman and Chapman.
The Weight will be released exclusively in U.S. theaters by Vertical on September 18, 2026.
