The journey of Channing Tatum’s Gambit from development hell to Deadpool & Wolverine.

After nearly a decade of anticipation and setbacks, Channing Tatum finally made his debut as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, and it was well worth the wait. Fans of the Cajun mutant and of Tatum himself have been waiting for this moment since 2015 when a standalone Gambit movie was first announced. Despite years of development, the project never saw the light of day. But, in a twist fitting for the multiverse-spanning antics of Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum’s Gambit has finally arrived, and it’s everything fans hoped it would be.
Tatum, who has been a longtime fan of the character, put everything he had into bringing Remy LeBeau to life. Known for his kinetic energy and sharp wit, Gambit is a beloved member of the X-Men with the unique ability to charge objects—usually playing cards—with explosive kinetic energy. Tatum’s portrayal not only nailed Gambit’s powers but also his signature style. With his comic-accurate costume and playful caricature of a Cajun accent, Tatum delivered a performance that paid homage to the character while also poking fun at Gambit’s over-the-top nature. He joined other almost forgotten Marvel heroes like Wesley Snipes as Blade, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Dafne Keen as X-23, and even Chris Evans as the Human Torch, Johnny Storm.
The journey to bring Gambit to the big screen has been a long one.
Tatum first became attached to the role in 2014, and by 2015, the standalone Gambit movie was officially announced. However, despite Tatum’s dedication to the project—including a bold offer to direct the movie himself in 2019—it faced numerous production delays and was eventually shelved. While other X-Men films continued to be released, Gambit seemed destined to remain in development limbo. But Tatum never gave up on the character, and now, in Deadpool & Wolverine, he’s finally getting the chance to showcase his version of the Cajun X-Man.
Gambit, also known as Remy LeBeau, has a rich history in the Marvel Universe. Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee, he first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #266 in 1990. Raised in the thieves’ guild of New Orleans, Gambit’s charm, rogue attitude, and unique power set quickly made him a fan favorite. Despite his limited live-action appearances, Taylor Kitsch played the role in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Since the early days, Gambit has always been a beloved character among X-Men fans, thanks to the animated series.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum’s portrayal is a dream come true for fans, proving that sometimes the wait is worth it. The film’s multiversal chaos gave Tatum the perfect platform to bring his Gambit to life finally, and he did so with the style and flair that the character deserves.
