Dangerous Animals brings Texas-sized terror on the water.

Horror thrillers aren’t usually my go-to genre, but Dangerous Animals just changed the game. Thanks to the amazing folks at IFC Films, Shudder, and Fons PR, I was brought out to Austin for what can only be described as a wild, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Texas premiere of Dangerous Animals wasn’t your typical red carpet event—it was a floating screening at Volente Beach on Lake Travis, presented by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Rolling Roadshow. And yes, I watched the film on the water, from a boat, surrounded by fearless fans floating in inner tubes under the Texas night sky.
Before the screening, we were treated to an extended intro and Q&A with director Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones) and Texas native Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone), moderated by Richard Whittaker of The Austin Chronicle. I also had the pleasure of spending real time with both Byrne and Harrison, diving into their process and passion behind this intense ride of a film.

About the Film
Dangerous Animals follows Zephyr (Harrison), a rebellious surfer abducted by a shark-obsessed serial killer played by Jai Courtney, in one of the most unhinged performances of his career. Trapped aboard his boat, Zephyr must outwit her captor before he carries out a ritualistic feeding to the sharks below.
Directed by Sean Byrne and written by Nick Lepard, this sun-drenched thriller blends exotic ocean visuals with brutal tension. The cast also includes Josh Heuston, adding more depth to this vicious cat-and-mouse game.
A Genre-Defying Experience
I’ll admit—horror thrillers aren’t usually my thing. But this film left an impression that’s still ringing in my ears. Dangerous Animals is exotic, shocking, and, above all, a hell of a lot of fun.
Visually, the movie looks fantastic—its coastal cinematography is rich and crisp, capturing both beauty and dread in equal measure. What truly elevated the experience, though, was the sound design and score, which really crank up the tension. Every creak, splash, and eerie music cue had the entire lake holding its breath.

And yes, there are plenty of shocking moments that’ll make even horror veterans squirm. With Byrne’s masterful direction, Harrison’s gritty, determined heroine, and Courtney’s spine-chilling villain, it’s a high-stakes thriller that dares you to look away—and dares you even harder not to.

It was more than just a screening—it was an experience. And if you weren’t scared of open water before this movie, you might be now.
Dangerous Animals hits theaters from IFC Films and Shudder on June 6, 2025. Don’t miss it—just maybe don’t watch it from a floatie.
