How Devil May Cry brings style, music, and action to Netflix.

Netflix is bringing the action-packed world of Devil May Cry to life in a new animated series. It is set to premiere on April 3, 2025. Spearheaded by showrunner Adi Shankar and animated by Studio Mir, the series promises to capture the stylish flair and adrenaline-pumping combat of Capcom’s beloved video game franchise. Featuring Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante, Scout Taylor-Compton as Mary (Lady), and the late Kevin Conroy as VP Baines, Devil May Cry is already shaping up to be a must-watch for both longtime fans and newcomers.
A Soundtrack That Rocks
The Devil May Cry series has always been synonymous with high-energy music. During our conversation, Shankar emphasized the soundtrack’s crucial role in setting the show’s tone. “As you pointed out, music is such a huge part of the Devil May Cry franchise, and I knew music had to be a huge part of my show,” Shankar said. “And it is.” Taylor-Compton echoed this sentiment, adding, “It’s almost like the music is its own character. Dante wouldn’t be who he is without it.”

Shankar further elaborated on the importance of music, saying, “I wanted every battle to feel like an intense music video. If the visuals didn’t match the energy of the soundtrack, we weren’t doing Devil May Cry justice.”
Fans can expect a pulse-pounding selection of tracks, with Limp Bizkit prominently featured. Additionally, a new song from Evanescence will be included, adding another layer of intensity to the soundtrack.
Bringing Dante and Lady to Life
Johnny Yong Bosch, who voices the iconic demon hunter Dante, spoke about embodying the character’s signature charm and attitude. “I don’t know, anything that’s in the jukebox works for Dante,” Bosch joked. “As long as it’s got a 140 BPM, I think we’re good.”

Meanwhile, Taylor-Compton embraced her role as Lady, channeling her energy and edge into the character. “Mine would be anything from Korn or Papa Roach. 100%,” she said when asked which song best represents Lady. “She was so fun to play, and I love that she has a potty mouth—because I do too.”
Adi Shankar on His Power Rangers Fan Film and Animation Evolution
Before tackling Devil May Cry, Shankar was well known for his viral Power Rangers fan film, which reimagined the beloved franchise in a darker, more mature light.
“When I made that Power Rangers short, I wanted to prove that nostalgic properties could evolve into something more cinematic,” Shankar said. “That project was kind of a love letter to the stuff I grew up with, but it also showed that there’s an audience craving mature storytelling in these universes.”
He credits that experience with helping him transition into projects like Castlevania and now Devil May Cry. “With Power Rangers, I was pushing against a lot of corporate walls. With Netflix and Devil May Cry, I finally get to go all out and bring the full vision to life without compromise.”
Honoring a Legend: Kevin Conroy’s Final Performance
The legendary Kevin Conroy, best known as the voice of Batman, delivers one of his final performances as VP Baines in Devil May Cry. Shankar described working with Conroy as an unforgettable experience.
“He was fantastic. He’s a wonderful actor, a wonderful person, a legend,” Shankar said. “I can say that working with Kevin has been the only time I’ve ever been nervous working with an actor. I’ve made movies with Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds—no fear whatsoever. But with Kevin, I was like, ‘Oh my God, he can see right through me.’”
Conroy’s presence in the series adds an extra layer of gravitas, and his performance is already being praised as one of the show’s highlights.
The Future of Devil May Cry
With a star-studded cast and a showrunner passionate about the source material, Devil May Cry is poised to become a defining entry in the realm of adult animation. Shankar credited Netflix for fostering a space where mature animated series can thrive.
“Before Netflix, you had kids’ cartoons and sitcoms for adults,” he explained. “This was just kind of a crazy off-the-cuff pitch in 2015, like, ‘Hey, I think there’s a huge audience for really violent cartoons made for grown-ups.’”
The eight-episode series is set to make a splash when it debuts, and fans are already eager for more. Shankar and the cast assured viewers that, should the series continue, they’re ready to deliver even bigger, bolder stories in future seasons.
Devil May Cry streams exclusively on Netflix starting April 3, 2025.
