Jennifer Lawrence officially confirms her emotional return as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, reuniting with Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson as tickets go on sale.

It’s true: Jennifer Lawrence is officially making her return to the world of Panem. Ahead of the film’s ticket sales opening up, Lawrence has fully confirmed that she is playing Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The official announcement comes months after fan speculation that Lawrence and her Hunger Games co-star, Josh Hutcherson, will be returning.
In a new episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence expressed her excitement in returning as Katniss in Liongate’s next Hunger Games film. Per Lawrence’s words: “It was the same crew. With Josh and Woody… it was so emotional. Josh and I didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other.”
Lawrence’s Katniss made her mark in the original Hunger Games trilogy, ending on a hopeful note in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. However, in Suzanne Collins’ latest novel, the epilogue of that story saw Katniss and her partner Peeta reuniting with an older Haymitch Abernathy. Although Haymitch hoped to be with Lenore, Katniss and Peeta gave Haymitch something he could never regret: a family.
With Lawrence and Hutcherson expected to return as their iconic characters, this means that Harrelson will likely return as Haymitch as well. That said, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping could make some slight changes to the novel’s original epilogue. Nonetheless, this reunion is something that many fans have been looking forward to for quite a while.
Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Tickets Now On Sale
On top of Lawrence’s confirmed return, Lionsgate also announced that tickets for The Hunger Games: The Sunrise on the Reaping are now on sale.

IMAX and premium large format exclusive early-access screenings nationwide, begin Wednesday, November 18 at 6 pm. Participating formats include IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX, Cinemark XD, Regal RPX, AMC Prime, and other exhibitor-branded premium large formats. Audiences can check local listings for showtimes and theater availability.
Set in the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, the story follows Haymitch into the arena, where he forms an unlikely alliance with fellow tribute Maysilee Donner (Mckenna Grace) and joins a coalition determined to challenge the Capitol’s control under President Snow (Ralph Fiennes). As the competition unfolds, Haymitch risks everything to take down the Games from within the arena — setting in motion the rebellion that will change Panem forever.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will release in theaters everywhere on November 20, 2026.
