Keanu Reeves joins the Sonic franchise.
In a dazzling new featurette, fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog series get an exciting behind-the-scenes look. They eagerly await the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The movie will hit theaters on December 20, 2024. The spotlight? None other than Keanu Reeves. He makes his debut as Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow is the franchise’s most complex and mysterious villain yet.
Director Jeff Fowler expressed his enthusiasm for Reeves joining the team. The all-star cast, including Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, and Idris Elba, also shared their excitement. In the featurette, Reeves himself dives into the psyche of Shadow, a character with a dark past and a thirst for revenge after 50 years in suspended animation.
“Shadow has that sympathetic, brooding kind of darkness that Keanu has mastered so brilliantly,” said Jim Carrey, who reprises his role as the hilariously maniacal Dr. Robotnik. With his powers of teleportation and unmatched speed, Shadow brings a chilling intensity to the Sonic universe. Reeves noted the emotional depth of the role, saying, “There’s really an internal journey to get to the anger and the emotion.”
The featurette is packed with the main cast members.
Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic, couldn’t help but marvel at Reeves’ delivery. “You feel all that anger but also determination in Keanu’s voice,” he said. Meanwhile, Idris Elba, returning as the stoic yet comedic Knuckles, called Reeves’ addition to the cast “iconic.”
The teaser clips showcase Keanu Reeves’ voice work, with Shadow declaring ominously, “Now humanity will pay the price,” and facing off against Sonic in a dramatic showdown. Carrey’s Robotnik hilariously chimes in, describing Shadow as “another thinking hedgehog,” much to the amusement of viewers.
Beyond the humor and heart, the featurette highlights the high stakes of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails must join forces like never before to face Shadow’s unstoppable power. Reeves teased that Shadow’s clash with Sonic will push both characters to their limits: “Playing Shadow is really on another level.”
