Moana 2 is A Bold New Adventure That Captures the Heart of Oceania

Moana 2 hits theaters on November 27th.

Walt Disney Animation Studios sets sail again with Moana 2, a delightful follow-up to the 2016 hit. Reuniting Moana (Auli‘i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson) for another adventure, the sequel expands the story with humor, heart, and music that audiences of all ages can enjoy. While it doesn’t fully match the original’s magic, it’s a worthy journey for franchise fans.

The story picks up three years after Moana’s initial voyage, as she receives a mystical call from her wayfinding ancestors. This leads her and Maui into uncharted waters, alongside a ragtag crew of seafarers, in search of a long-lost treasure that could change the course of Oceania’s future. The stakes are high, but the film’s climax, unfortunately, lacks the epic confrontation fans might have hoped for. While the journey is bold and adventurous, the resolution feels more subdued than expected.

SISTERS — In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ all-new feature film “Moana 2,” Moana embarks on an expansive new voyage to the far seas of Oceania—but she’ll surely miss her litter sister, Simea. Featuring the voices Auli‘i Cravalho as Moana and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Simea, the all-new feature film opens in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024. © 2024 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Visually, the Moana 2 revisits the vibrant, awe-inspiring world of Oceania, with lush seas and picturesque islands. However, it falls short of the breathtaking animation of its predecessor. Originally intended as a Disney+ series, the film’s animation occasionally feels outdated, with some character designs appearing less polished. Despite this, the world-building still captures the charm and beauty of Moana’s universe, even though the exploration of new islands is limited.

The music is another highlight.

It features fun and catchy songs that elevate the story’s emotional beats. However, the melodies lack the iconic, unforgettable quality of the first film’s soundtrack. Voice performances from Cravalho and Johnson remain stellar, with the duo effortlessly rekindling the dynamic that made them beloved characters.

Humor is one of Moana 2’s strongest points, providing plenty of laughs for both kids and adults. The film delivers an enjoyable ride at a brisk 1 hour and 40 minutes but occasionally drags in the middle. The pacing issues diminish some tension, but the heartwarming themes and lovable characters keep the audience engaged.

Verdict

I give Moana 2 4 out 5 stars. With its heartfelt story, humor, and a touch of nostalgia, it is a fun sequel that reaffirms why we love these characters. Though not without its flaws, it’s an entertaining family film that will leave viewers smiling.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
