HBO Max’s Lanterns teaser puts Hal Jordan and John Stewart in a dark DC mystery.

HBO Max is lighting the way for DC Studios’ next major series.
The streamer has released a new teaser for “Lanterns,” the upcoming original drama from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television. The footage also reveals a first look at Laura Linney, who joins a stacked cast led by Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, and Kelly Macdonald.
“Lanterns” will debut Sunday, Aug. 16, on HBO and stream on HBO Max. The series follows new recruit John Stewart, played by Pierre, and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, played by Chandler. Together, the two intergalactic cops are pulled into a dark, Earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the American heartland.
Lanterns Brings the Green Lantern Mythology Back to Earth
Rather than opening with a giant space opera, “Lanterns” appears to be taking a grounded approach to one of DC’s most cosmic corners. The logline gives the show a detective-drama hook, with Stewart and Jordan following a murder case that could carry larger consequences for the DC Universe.

That setup makes “Lanterns” feel like a major tonal swing for DC Studios. The Green Lantern mythology has always blended space, law enforcement, power rings, and moral willpower. However, this series looks ready to use those ideas inside a darker mystery built around crime, secrets, and the strange things hiding in plain sight.
The new teaser also gives fans their first look at Linney in the series. Her casting adds serious dramatic weight to a show already packed with acclaimed performers.
Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre Lead the Series
Chandler plays Hal Jordan, one of the most famous Green Lanterns in DC Comics. The Emmy-winning actor is best known for his beloved role as Coach Eric Taylor in “Friday Night Lights.” He also starred in Netflix’s “Bloodline” and appeared in major films such as “Argo,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Manchester by the Sea,” “Game Night,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

Pierre plays John Stewart, one of DC’s most important Green Lantern heroes. The British actor has been on a major rise thanks to standout roles in “The Underground Railroad,” “Old,” “Brother,” “Genius: MLK/X” and Netflix’s “Rebel Ridge.” He also voiced Mufasa in Barry Jenkins’ “Mufasa: The Lion King,” giving him another major franchise role before stepping into the DC Universe.
Together, Chandler and Pierre give “Lanterns” a strong veteran-and-rookie dynamic. Hal Jordan brings history, experience, and baggage. John Stewart brings discipline, focus, and a fresh perspective. That contrast could become the emotional engine of the series.
Guy Gardner Will Also Appear After Superman
The “Lanterns” cast also includes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern from the comics. Fillion’s Guy Gardner previously appeared in James Gunn’s “Superman,” making his role in “Lanterns” another connective thread in DC Studios’ expanding universe.
Guy Gardner has often been portrayed as loud, cocky, stubborn, and fearless. That personality should bring a very different Green Lantern energy to the show. If Hal Jordan is the seasoned legend and John Stewart is the grounded new recruit, Guy Gardner could be the wild card who shakes up the room every time he appears.
A Deep Cast Joins DC Studios’ New Mystery
The “Lanterns” cast includes Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

For HBO and DC Studios, “Lanterns” could become one of the most important projects in the new DC Universe. The show is not just introducing Hal Jordan and John Stewart in a major way. It is also building a bridge between comic book spectacle and a murder mystery designed for weekly television.
If the teaser is any indication, “Lanterns” will not treat the Green Lantern Corps as simple superhero wish fulfillment. It looks ready to ask what happens when cosmic power lands in the middle of a very human investigation.
