Meet Max & the Midknights: Inside Nickelodeon’s Animated Fantasy Series – Interview

CG animation meets fantasy adventure in Max & the Midknights.

Nickelodeon‘s newest CG-animated series, Max & the Midknights, introduces a world of fantasy. It combines humor and adventure for young audiences. It is adapted from the best-selling books by acclaimed author and cartoonist Lincoln Peirce. Peirce is known for Big Nate. His writing and illustration style have made a splash among middle-grade readers. Max & the Midknights expands his influence on animated television. The show follows Max, an adventurous 10-year-old girl. She has a heart set on saving her kingdom from dark forces. Max leads a team of quirky friends on a mission to restore peace to Byjovia.

I spoke with the vibrant voice cast in a recent virtual press junket. They shared insights about their characters. They discussed how the show reflects a rich mix of fantasy elements and contemporary humor.

Bringing Max & the Midknights to Life

In Max & the Midknights, viewers meet a unique cast of characters. Each character has specific interests that make them memorable. Blu del Barrio (Star Trek: Discovery) voices Max, who is passionate about knights, swordplay, and all things action. Reflecting on the role, Del Barrio shared, “Max is all about knighthood and sword fighting. She’s right where she’s meant to be, and she’s fully immersed in this world of bravery and chivalry.”

Max’s close friend Millie is voiced by Saturday Night Live alum Melissa Villaseñor. She adds a dose of eerie curiosity and wit to the team. Villaseñor described her character as someone who “nerds out on creepy cool things, like magic and the darker side of fantasy.” Villaseñor admitted to not knowing about the Max & the Midknights book series until joining the show but said that its charm and Millie’s love for adventure drew her in immediately.

Zeno Robinson (Transformers: EarthSpark), who plays Simon, sees his character as a heartfelt “zoologist” of sorts. “Simon’s an animal lover and would probably nerd out over animal facts,” Robinson explained. Simon’s sensitivity toward animals makes him relatable. His fascination with them gives him an endearing quality. This combination sets him apart from traditional adventure heroes. Robinson added, “If Simon had access to a cell phone, he’d be a nature documentarian, capturing everything in photos.”

The core group is comprised of Kevyn, voiced by Caleb Yen (Beyblade X), a knowledge-seeker and lore enthusiast. “Kevyn is all about books and maps, especially ancient stories and facts that challenge the mind,” Yen said. He humorously imagined Kevyn as a future Wikipedia contributor, noting, “He’d love Wikipedia and Tumblr, constantly updating and writing about new discoveries and fandoms.”

Peirce’s Kingdom of Byjovia Gets the Nickelodeon Touch

The show itself is visually captivating, with cinematic animation techniques that appeal to both kids and adults. The vibrant, CG-rendered scenes merge seamlessly with Peirce’s humor. This combination takes audiences into the magical Kingdom of Byjovia. There, Max and her friends take on the nefarious King Gastley. The villainous king has stolen the throne, forcing his unfair rule on the kingdom, leaving Max and her friends to restore justice. Max’s courageous spirit and her Midknights’ unique skills create a blend of humor and suspense. This combination, filled with friendship, has become a defining element of the series.

As the characters embark on their journey to reclaim the kingdom, Max & the Midknights touches on essential themes of loyalty, resilience, and the power of friendship. The series features original songs that add to its adventurous tone, along with intricate camera angles that make the scenes feel almost movie-like. “It’s one of the coolest animated series I’ve seen, with some really inventive shots,” said one of the cast members, reflecting on the show’s quality.

Quest Essentials

In the press junket, I asked each cast member what they’d consider a “must-have” in a survival kit. Yen humorously chose “a lobster roll that never runs out,” while Robinson opted for practicality with a first aid kit, explaining that “it’s essential for any dangerous quest.” Villaseñor and del Barrio rounded out the list with their love for sustenance and fun weapons, like peanut butter sandwiches and, perhaps surprisingly, a lightsaber.

Reflecting on what technology their characters might find intriguing, del Barrio said Max would love a “real lightsaber,” while Yen thought Kevyn would gravitate toward digital resources like Wikipedia, where he could obsessively fact-check and update entries. Villaseñor, voicing Millie, felt her character would be most fascinated with social media, specifically Instagram, where she could connect with like-minded fans of the dark and mystical.

A New Era for a Classic Author

Peirce’s Max & the Midknights adds another layer to his work with Nickelodeon’s adaptation, emphasizing that kids’ content can be both entertaining and visually engaging. Del Barrio expressed pride in bringing Peirce’s vision to a new generation, saying, “Lincoln created something beautiful, and I’m thrilled to be part of bringing it to life.”

Max & the Midknights is a show with a fun storyline. It features interesting characters and amazing visuals that grab young viewers’ attention. It mixes comedy, fantasy, and friendship, showing bravery and teamwork’s importance. The series is exciting and perfect for family viewing. It will easily be a favorite on Nickelodeon, blending classic storytelling with a modern animation twist.
