What We Know About Pixar’s Next Film Gatto After Toy Story 5

Pixar’s Gatto trailer sends cats into Venice’s mob underworld.

Pixar already has its next big theatrical release lined up after Toy Story 5, and it is not another sequel. The studio is heading back into original storytelling with Gatto, a new animated adventure set in the mysterious, canal-filled streets of Venice, Italy.

Disney and Pixar’s Gatto will release exclusively in theaters on March 5, 2027. It is following the highly anticipated Toy Story 5, which arrives in theaters in 2026. After one of Pixar’s most beloved franchises returns to the big screen, Gatto gives the studio a chance to launch a brand-new world, a new lead character, and a very different kind of animated adventure.

The first teaser trailer for Gatto introduces audiences to a feline-run underbelly of Venice, where cats, superstition, and mob-style danger collide.

What Is Pixar’s Gatto About?

Gatto follows Nero, a scrappy black cat who has spent years navigating Venice, Italy. After surviving in the canal-ridden and superstitious city, Nero begins to wonder whether he has lived the right lives.

That question becomes more complicated because Nero is indebted to Rocco, the local feline mob boss. Caught in a difficult situation, Nero is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship that may finally help him discover his purpose — unless Venice gets the better of him first.

The teaser trailer shows Nero and Rocco questioning another cat in a funny interrogation scene, giving fans their first look at the movie’s mix of comedy, mystery, and underworld energy.

Who Voices Nero and Rocco in Gatto?

Pixar has added two major names to the Gatto voice cast.

Mark Ruffalo voices Nero, the scrappy black cat at the center of the story. Ruffalo who fans know for playing the hulk in The Avengers films, Spotlight, and Foxcatcher, and his casting suggests Nero will have the kind of warmth, humor, and emotional conflict Pixar often builds its best characters around.

Laurence Fishburne voices Rocco, the ruthless local feline mob boss. Fishburne, known for The Matrix trilogy and John Wick films, brings instant weight to the role. A Pixar mob boss cat voiced by Fishburne is already one of the biggest reasons to pay attention to this movie.

Why Gatto Is Important For Pixar

Gatto feels like a major release for Pixar because it  is the next film after Toy Story 5.

The Toy Story franchise is one of Pixar’s most iconic and dependable brands. It carries decades of audience love, nostalgia, and box office power. But once that sequel arrives, Pixar’s next move is especially important.

That next move is Gatto, an original film with a fresh setting and a new story.

That matters because Pixar’s legacy has always been built on bold ideas that sound unusual at first but become emotional, crowd-pleasing movies. The studio has made audiences care about toys, monsters, fish, robots, rats, emotions, and souls. Now, Pixar is asking audiences to follow a black cat in Venice who is caught between debt, destiny, and the possibility that he has not used his lives the right way.

That is a very Pixar idea.

Why The Hype Is Already Building

The biggest reason Gatto is already generating interest is that it combines several strong hooks.

It is Pixar’s next film after Toy Story 5. It is an original story. It is set in Venice. It has a feline mob boss. It stars Mark Ruffalo and Laurence Fishburne. It comes from the team behind Luca. And it appears to have the kind of emotional question Pixar fans love: What makes a life meaningful?

The Venice setting also gives Pixar a visually rich playground. The canals, bridges, narrow streets, and old-world atmosphere make the city perfect for animation. Add a secret cat society underneath it all, and Gatto immediately feels different from anything else on the Pixar slate.

The Luca Team Returns For Gatto

Gatto is directed by Enrico Casarosa and produced by Andrea Warren, the filmmaking team behind Pixar’s Oscar-nominated feature Luca.

That creative connection is important. Luca was praised for its heart, friendship, Italian setting, and warm visual style. Gatto, Casarosa, and Warren are returning to Italy, but this time with a very different tone.

Instead of the bright seaside charm of Luca, Gatto explores the shadowy, superstitious side of Venice. That contrast makes the movie even more interesting. It feels like a spiritual cousin to Luca in location and creative DNA, but with a new flavor built around cats, mystery, comedy, and danger.

Why Gatto Could Be One Of Pixar’s Most Unique Films

Pixar’s best films usually work because they take a high-concept idea and ground it in a real emotional journey.

With Gatto, the high concept is instantly clickable: a black cat in Venice owes a debt to a feline mob boss. But underneath that is a story about purpose, regret, and whether it is ever too late to change the path you are on.

That is the part that could make Gatto more than just a funny cat movie.

When Does Pixar’s Gatto Come Out?

Gatto releases exclusively in theaters on March 5, 2027.

After Toy Story 5, Pixar will shift from one of its biggest franchises to an original animated adventure that introduces a new world, new characters, and a new emotional journey. With Mark Ruffalo, Laurence Fishburne, and the Luca creative team involved, Gatto already feels like one of Pixar’s biggest upcoming releases to watch.
