Sony Picture’s Tony Vinciquerra Reflects on the Box Office Miss of Kraven the Hunter

Ravi Ahuja to lead Sony Pictures as new CEO amid industry shifts.

Tony Vinciquerra has steered Sony Pictures Entertainment as chairman and CEO since 2017. He will step down next month. Vinciquerra will hand over the reins to Ravi Ahuja, the current chief operating officer, the company announced. This transition comes amidst reflections on Vinciquerra’s tenure, particularly regarding the performance of recent Sony projects.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Vinciquerra discussed the global expansion of Sony’s anime streaming service, Crunchyroll, stating, “We haven’t rolled Crunchyroll out in the entire world yet, so we still have quite a ways to go.” This expansion represents one of the strategic focuses during his leadership, aiming to capitalize on the growing popularity of anime worldwide.

However, not all of Vinciquerra’s initiatives have seen success.

He candidly addressed the disappointing box office performance of “Kraven the Hunter,” acknowledging it as the “worst launch we had in the 7 1/2 years.” Despite his personal belief in the film’s quality, he noted, “I still don’t understand, because the film is not a bad film.”

Vinciquerra also reflected on another underperforming film, “Madame Web,” which he feels was unfairly treated by critics. “Madame Web underperformed in the theaters because the press just crucified it,” he said, highlighting that despite negative reviews, the film did well on Netflix. He attributed the film’s box office failure to critical backlash rather than the film’s merits, drawing a comparison to “Venom,” which overcame similar criticism to become a significant success. “These are not terrible films. They were just destroyed by the critics in the press, for some reason,” he added.

Ravi Ahuja, stepping into the CEO role, brings a background in television production and international operations to Sony Pictures, having joined the company in 2021. His leadership will be pivotal. Sony Pictures must navigate the evolving landscape of film and television. Streaming services play an increasingly significant role in this era.

Vinciquerra’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for Sony Pictures. Ahuja is now tasked with steering the studio into the future. He will focus on both traditional cinema and the expanding digital space.
