Tom Holland’s latest Marvel adventure delivered the second-biggest domestic and worldwide openings ever, despite a high-quality bootleg spreading across X.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung into theaters with a historic opening weekend that exceeded even the highest expectations.
The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios blockbuster earned an estimated $355 million domestically during its first three days. That makes it the second-biggest opening weekend in domestic box-office history, falling just behind the $357 million earned by Avengers: Endgame in April 2019.
Globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $927 million during its opening weekend, marking the second-biggest worldwide debut in box-office history behind only Avengers: Endgame.
According to ScreenDollars, the movie helped push the total domestic box office to $430 million across all films playing over the weekend. That represents the highest three-day total ever recorded.
The movie achieved those enormous numbers despite a high-quality bootleg of the entire film spreading across X during its opening weekend. The unauthorized upload remained available for hours and reportedly reached nearly 6 million views before it was removed.
Brand New Day Went Beyond Expectations
Expectations were naturally high for Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie. However, questions remained about whether it could match the excitement surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home, which united Holland with former Spider-Man stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Brand New Day did more than match its predecessor’s momentum. It completely shattered the previous Spider-Man opening-weekend record of $260 million set by No Way Home in December 2021.
The movie came within only $2 million of matching Avengers: Endgame’s all-time domestic opening record. That result places Brand New Day among the biggest theatrical events Hollywood has ever produced.
It is an especially impressive achievement for a movie arriving without the multiverse-driven reunion that helped make No Way Home a worldwide phenomenon. Instead, Brand New Day begins a new chapter in Peter Parker’s life following the emotional conclusion of the previous film.
Spider-Man’s New Cast and Director Delivered
Spider-Man: Brand New Day was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the filmmaker behind Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Cretton brings a more grounded and emotionally driven approach to Peter Parker’s story while still delivering the large-scale action audiences expect from a Spider-Man blockbuster.
Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. The movie also brings Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, better known as The Punisher, into Spider-Man’s cinematic world.
Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner and Hulk, while Michael Mando reprises his role as Mac Gargan from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Marvin Jones III appears as Lonnie Lincoln, also known as Tombstone.
The cast also includes Sadie Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, Tramell Tillman and Eman Esfandi. The combination of returning favorites and new additions gave the movie a different identity from Holland’s previous Spider-Man adventures.
Full Spider-Man Movie Leaked Across X
The movie’s record-breaking performance is even more remarkable considering the full-length leak that spread across X.
A high-quality bootleg of Spider-Man: Brand New Day was uploaded to the social media platform on Friday. The unauthorized video remained available for several hours and reportedly accumulated nearly 6 million views before it was finally taken down.
While that number does not necessarily mean every user watched the entire movie, the upload received an unusually large amount of exposure during the film’s opening weekend.
However, the leak did not prevent audiences from experiencing Brand New Day inside a theater. Millions of moviegoers still purchased tickets to see Spider-Man on the biggest screen possible.
The results demonstrate that a bootleg cannot fully replace the theatrical experience, especially when audiences believe a movie deserves to be seen with premium projection and sound.
Spider-Man Helps Deliver Hollywood’s Biggest Weekend
Spider-Man: Brand New Day did more than break franchise records. It helped create the biggest overall weekend in domestic box-office history.
According to ScreenDollars, all movies playing in theaters generated approximately $430 million over the three-day period. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey made a major contribution with another $51 million during its third weekend.
Having two massive event films playing simultaneously gave theaters a much-needed boost. It also showed that audiences are willing to support multiple major releases instead of choosing only one.
Screen Dollars expects the 2026 domestic box office to reach approximately $9.5 billion. That would represent an attendance increase of roughly 5% compared to last year.
Moviegoing attendance is also showing signs of increasing for the first time since the pandemic. The United States could experience a net increase in operating theater screens this year, which would also be the first since the pandemic began.
Spider-Man Remains a Theatrical Powerhouse
Concerns about superhero fatigue have continued throughout Hollywood, especially after several comic book adaptations struggled to connect with audiences. Spider-Man: Brand New Day proves that moviegoers have not abandoned superhero stories.
Instead, audiences have become more selective about which movies feel worthy of a trip to the theater.
The combination of Holland’s return, Cretton’s direction, Peter Parker’s emotional journey and major characters such as The Punisher and Hulk helped transform Brand New Day into a true theatrical event.
Its opening weekend also proves that even a widely circulated bootleg could not stop millions of fans from heading to theaters.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day may have finished just short of Avengers: Endgame’s domestic opening record, but its $355 million debut remains one of the biggest achievements in box-office history.
The movie shattered expectations, delivered a new franchise record and helped theaters experience their most successful collective weekend ever.
