Spider-Man: Brand New Day First Look Reveals Tombstone, Jean DeWolff and Boomerang Powers

Spider-Man’s next movie brings Tombstone, Boomerang and The Hand into focus.

Nerdtropolis has captured a brand-new look at one of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s most exciting new villains.

During a New York City pop-up tied to Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ upcoming Spider-Man movie, Nerdtropolis contributor Chris Gallardo captured the first glimpse at Marvin Jones III as Tombstone. The reveal gives fans a closer look at the live-action version of one of Spider-Man’s most intimidating street-level enemies, as Peter Parker’s next chapter continues to take shape ahead of the film’s theatrical release.

The pop-up also revealed more details surrounding The Bear star Liza Colón-Zayas, who plays Detective Jean DeWolff in the film. Based on the new information, DeWolff appears to be working with Spider-Man as he hunts down the Hand, the dangerous ninja organization that has long been tied to the darker corners of Marvel’s street-level universe.

Marvin Jones III Steps Into Live-Action as Tombstone

Marvin Jones III is no stranger to Tombstone. The actor previously voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, bringing a cold and dangerous edge to the animated version of the villain. Now, Brand New Day gives Jones the chance to bring Lonnie Lincoln, better known as Tombstone, into live action.

Tombstone is one of Spider-Man’s most physically imposing enemies. In Marvel Comics, the character is a ruthless crime boss with pale skin, sharpened teeth, and superhuman toughness. He is not just another street criminal. Tombstone challenges Spider-Man both physically and mentally, especially when the story leans into New York’s criminal underworld.

His appearance in Brand New Day a big deal. After Spider-Man: No Way Home erased Peter Parker from the memories of the people closest to him, the new movie finds Peter fighting crime full-time in a city that no longer knows his name. Now Brand New Day looks to be a more grounded Spider-Man story, with Peter facing villains who are tied directly to the streets he protects.

Tombstone fits that direction perfectly.

Liza Colón-Zayas Plays Detective Jean DeWoflf

The pop-up coverage from Gallardo also points to a major supporting role for Liza Colón-Zayas as Detective Jean DeWolff.

In Marvel Comics, Jean DeWolff is one of Spider-Man’s most important police allies. She is usually shown as a tough, no-nonsense detective who understands that Spider-Man is trying to protect the city, even when other members of law enforcement see him as a problem.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day appears to be taking the franchise in a more street-level direction, with Detective Jean DeWolff helping Spider-Man hunt down the Hand while the fourth installment introduces a supernatural martial arts threat connected to Marvel’s larger universe.

The Hand has deep ties to characters like Daredevil, Elektra, and the Punisher. With Jon Bernthal returning as Frank Castle, the group’s involvement could push Spider-Man into a more dangerous world than the one he faced in his previous solo movies. Instead of only dealing with multiverse chaos or high-tech threats, Peter may now be forced into a war happening in the shadows of New York City.

For Colón-Zayas, the role is also a major Marvel moment. The Emmy-winning The Bear star brings excitment to Jean DeWolff, a character who could become one of Spider-Man’s most important human allies in this new chapter.

Boomerang’s Powers Revealed in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

The pop-up also featured new details about Boomerang, another classic Spider-Man villain expected to appear in Brand New Day.

According to the image, Boomerang’s abilities in the film include:

Pinpoint Accuracy: Boomerang is shown as having extremely precise aim with his projectile throws. That makes him a major challenge for Spider-Man, who relies on speed, reflexes, and instinct in battle.

Flight with Jet Boots: Boomerang can fly using advanced jet boots, giving him an aerial advantage and allowing him to attack Spider-Man from different angles across the city.

Stealth and Acrobatics: The character is also described as highly skilled in stealth movement and acrobatics, which suggests he may be more than a throwaway villain. He could be used as a quick-moving threat who can keep up with Spider-Man during chase sequences.

Boomerang is often treated as one of Spider-Man’s more colorful villains, but Brand New Day seems to be giving him a practical action-movie upgrade.

Between Tombstone, Boomerang, Scorpion, the Hand, and the return of the Punisher, Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks like it is taking Peter Parker into a much rougher version of New York.

The film begins a new chapter for Peter Parker, who is now fully committed to fighting crime as Spider-Man in a world that has forgotten he exists. But watching his old friends move on without him starts to awaken something darker inside Peter. That change may be impossible to control, but it could also be the only thing strong enough to protect the city and the people he still loves.

Brand New Day stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Destin Daniel Cretton directs the film from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into movie theaters on July 31, 2026.
