Spider-Man Returns to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with New Balloon

Spider-Man takes flight in a new John Romita Sr.-inspired balloon.

Spider-Man is swinging back into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year, marking a highly anticipated return after nearly a decade away. Marvel and Macy’s have teamed up to debut a brand-new Spider-Man balloon, which will soar above New York City’s streets on November 28 during the 98th edition of the iconic holiday event.

Inspired by the legendary comic book artist John Romita Sr., the balloon’s design pays homage to one of the most recognizable depictions of Spider-Man. Known for his significant contributions to the character, Romita Sr. helped shape Spider-Man’s world, introducing beloved characters such as Mary Jane Watson and developing Spidey’s rogues’ gallery.

“For over 85 years, Marvel’s home has always been New York City,” said Chris Fondacaro, Head of Marvel Franchise. “When the opportunity came to bring one of our most iconic characters back to the Parade, it was the perfect fit to celebrate both Spider-Man and our brand’s legacy while honoring John Romita Sr.’s indelible impact on the Marvel Universe.”

This year’s balloon brings our web-slinger back to Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time since 2014.

Spidey made his debut in the Parade in 1981 and became the first Marvel balloon to appear in 1987. Over the years, Spider-Man has been a favorite for spectators and fans alike, solidifying his place as a true New York icon. “Spider-Man and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade share a special bond with New York City,” said Jordan Dabby, producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “We’re beyond excited for fans to see the new balloon in action this year. Spidey soaring over the city will be an unforgettable sight.”

The collaboration between Marvel and Macy’s Parade Studio involved meticulous efforts to ensure the new balloon faithfully represents Romita Sr.’s classic design. Spider-Man was co-created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, making his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962. Since then, he has become one of the most beloved and globally recognized superheroes, with fans of all ages embracing his adventures across various media.

The 98th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs Thursday, November 28, on NBC and streams on Peacock. Spider-Man is set to once again capture the hearts of viewers nationwide.
