In a thrilling return to theaters, the modern horror classic The Babadook is set to send shivers down audiences’ spines once more, marking its 10th anniversary. Beginning on September 19th, fans will have the unique opportunity to experience the eerie tale on the big screen, complete with an exclusive Q&A session featuring the film’s visionary writer and director, Jennifer Kent.

The Babadook quickly became an indie horror sensation, captivating viewers with its unsettling atmosphere and deeply psychological narrative. The film follows Amelia, played by Essie Davis. She is a grieving widow struggling to cope with the death of her husband and the overwhelming task of raising her troubled 6-year-old son, Samuel (Noah Wiseman). Samuel is plagued by visions of a sinister creature he believes is coming to kill them both. These nightmarish visions seem to be tied to a disturbing storybook that mysteriously appears in their home titled Mister Babadook.
As Samuel’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic and violent, Amelia’s desperation grows. She attempts to medicate him, dismissing his fears as mere delusions. However, as the chilling presence of the Babadook begins to manifest itself around her, Amelia is forced to confront the terrifying possibility that Samuel’s warnings might be all too real. The film’s exploration of grief, motherhood, and the dark recesses of the human psyche leaves a haunting impression that lingers long after the credits roll.
Jennifer Kent, who crafted this harrowing tale, has cemented herself as a force in the horror genre. The Babadook premiered at Sundance and garnered over 100 nominations and awards, solidifying its status as a modern masterpiece. Following the success of her debut feature, Kent continued to push boundaries with her second film, The Nightingale. She also contributed to Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. In addition to its theatrical re-release, The Babadook will screen at this year’s Fantastic Fest. It offers horror enthusiasts another chance to witness the film’s bone-chilling terror.
