Mel Gibson’s landmark biblical epic gets a nationwide re-release.

The Passion of the Christ is returning to theaters nationwide for a special one-week engagement.
Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment will bring Mel Gibson’s landmark biblical epic back to the big screen from September 10–17, 2026. The re-release will feature a newly remastered 4K presentation with Dolby Atmos sound.
The limited theatrical event will also include an exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek at Gibson’s long-awaited follow-up, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One. That film is set to open exclusively in theaters on May 6, 2027.
First released in 2004, The Passion of the Christ stars Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth. The film follows the final 12 hours of Jesus’ life, including His trial, crucifixion, and resurrection.
A New Theatrical Presentation for a Defining Faith Film
For this special release, The Passion of the Christ has been remastered from the original camera negative in 4K resolution. The new version also features a color pass supervised by original cinematographer Caleb Deschanel.

The audio presentation has also been upgraded with a Dolby Atmos mix reviewed and approved by Gibson.
The film became a major cultural event when it first opened, with Jim Caviezel, Monica Bellucci, Maia Morgenstern, and Sergio Rubini helping bring the biblical epic to life. It earned three Academy Award nominations and helped redefine the reach of faith-based films at the box office.
For 20 years, The Passion of the Christ also stood as the highest-grossing domestic R-rated film of all time.
The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One Sneak Peek
The re-release also begins the road to The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One. Audiences who attend the theatrical engagement will see a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming epic. The film will continue the story after Christ’s sacrifice and focus on His victory over death.
Lionsgate describes the sequel as one of Gibson’s most ambitious filmmaking efforts. The studio also announced that Cedar Hill and Mike Ilitch Jr. Productions will executive produce the film. Both companies are investors in the project.
Lionsgate and Fathom on Bringing the Film Back
Kevin Grayson, president of Worldwide Distribution for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, called The Passion of the Christ “one of the most extraordinary theatrical experiences ever created.”

He added that the restoration allows audiences to see the film in a new way while introducing it to a new generation.
Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, also highlighted the film’s lasting cultural impact. He said Fathom is pleased to continue its relationship with Lionsgate and bring the movie back with 4K remastering and Dolby Atmos sound.
