From Broadway to the big screen, ‘Wicked’ Part 1 casts its spell.

The long-awaited cinematic adaptation of Wicked has finally arrived. It delivers a dazzling spectacle for fans of the beloved Broadway musical. Newcomers will also enjoy the film. Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), this two-hour-and-20-minute Part 1 sets the stage for an epic conclusion in 2025. The split into two films may raise eyebrows. However, the film’s ambition and heart make it a magical experience. It is worth the wait.
As someone who doesn’t naturally gravitate toward musicals, I was cautiously optimistic about Wicked. My only exposure to the story was seeing the Broadway production in New York, which I unexpectedly loved. Now, with a big-budget adaptation, I worried whether the cinematic version could recapture that magic.
The film opens with a somewhat muddled prologue set in the present, initially leaving me unsure of what to expect. However, as the story unfolded, it became increasingly captivating. Chu’s direction takes bold risks that pay off, creating a visually stunning and emotionally rich world. The fantastical Land of Oz and Shiz University come alive. The incredible production design enhances their magic. The vibrant costumes and CGI animals feel seamlessly integrated.

Cynthia Erivo shines as Elphaba.
She is the misunderstood green-skinned girl who grows into the powerful Wicked Witch of the West. Her performance is emotionally grounded, and her powerhouse vocals are breathtaking. Ariana Grande surprises as Glinda, bringing a lighthearted and charming energy to the role while also delivering impressive vocal performances. Together, they share a dynamic chemistry that anchors the film.

Supporting performances are equally compelling. Michelle Yeoh brings regal authority to Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum offers an enigmatic turn as the Wizard. Peter Dinklage voices Dr. Dillamond, the goat professor, in a standout role that brings depth and warmth. The cast is rounded out by Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Marissa Bode.

Musical numbers are plentiful but always stay within their welcome. They are weaved seamlessly into the narrative and offer strong performances from our leads. The stakes rise as the story progresses, culminating in an action-packed and visually striking third act. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, this film reimagines the Land of Oz. It is a place of complex politics, profound friendships, and life-altering choices. Fans of the musical fans will also be delighted with a couple epic cameos.
Verdict
I give Wicked 4 out of 5 stars and eagerly await Part 2’s arrival. While the film starts slow, it builds momentum, rewarding patient viewers with a rich, immersive experience. It’s a cinematic triumph bringing Oz new life while honoring its Broadway roots. The emotional conclusion, punctuated by the words “To Be Continued,” will leave audiences eager for Part 2. Catch it in theaters starting November 22nd.
